Vermaelen gets Arsenal Captaincy

By Nick Lander

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Thomas Vermaelen is the new captain of Arsenal. The 26-year-old Belgian is entering his fourth season at the club and will be supported by vice-captain Mikel Arteta.

Before he arrived in North London, Vermaelen was captain of Dutch club Ajax, and is occasionally captain of his national side. Vermaelen is the first captain that Arsenal have appointed solely to be a leader in recent years, as it has been used to try to keep Cesc Fabregas, Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie at the club, with varying degrees of success.

Former captain Fabregas tweeted his congratulations, saying that Vermaelen will "do a great job." Arsenal's new captain himself says that he is, "really happy and proud o be Arsenal captain - it's a real honour."

Arsenal fans will be hoping that the centre back becomes the first captain since Patrick Viera in 2005 to lift a major trophy this summer.
