Chelsea set to force Arsenal's hand

By Nick Lander

Is youngster Luke Shaw set for London?

It has been reported that Chelsea are on the brink of making a £4m bid for Southampton youngster Luke Shaw. Valued somewhere in the region of £8m, the Champions League holders would be bidding below the price the Saints will be willing to sell at.

The 16 year old left back made has only made one senior appearance, as a substitute in the FA Cup. Southampton describe him as talented at taking set pieces, and as an "attacking" full back. Capped at Under-16 level by England, Shaw is a bright prospect, and with the left back slot at Arsenal far from certain, it is expected that they too will be involved in the bidding. The Gunners have an established relationship with Southampton and have a much better track record of giving young players opportunities, factors which may count in their favour with both player and club.

Shaw cannot sign a professional contract until July 12th and it is expected that the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea will start proceedings at that juncture.
